California startups have three ways to build: hire in-house, use offshore contractors, or engage a managed product team. The right choice depends on your stage. Early on, a managed team usually wins on speed and risk; later, in-house makes sense for your core.
In-house
Best for long-term ownership of your core product, but slow and expensive to assemble in California, and risky if an early hire is wrong. Most valuable once you know exactly what you are building.
Offshore contractors
Cheapest hourly, but the savings vanish if seniority, communication, or continuity are weak. Works for well-defined tasks, less so for owning an evolving product.
Managed product team
A senior team with a project manager and weekly demos gives you in-house accountability with offshore economics, ideal while you are proving the model. See our staff augmentation model and how we work with California founders.
